The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend brought beautiful weather for Ironton High School’s annual commencement. Dave Osborne presented the Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship. Highlights of the award speech are presented here:
Good evening. My name is Dave Osborne and I am the son of Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne. Tonight marks a milestone for us as this is the 10th year we have presented a scholarship to a outstanding student here at Ironton High School. The scholarship is a one-time $1,500 award and is named for my father, who served the community of Ironton and Lawrence County for over 30 years before his passing in 1985 and my mother, who supported our family and my father and lived in Ironton almost all of her life before her passing in 2002.
Tonight’s winner exemplifies what we look for in someone to award our scholarship. Not only has our winner been outstanding in the classroom but has served Ironton and Lawrence County through extensive volunteer work. I am proud to present the 2008 Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship to Mary Katherine Bowen.
