Ironton High School Commencement
May 25, 2014

Good evening. My name is Dave Osborne and I am the son of Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne. Tonight we continue the tradition started 16 years ago of awarding a one-time $1,500 scholarship to an Ironton High School graduating senior who has excelled not only in the classroom but also in many extracurricular activities, as well as helping the Ironton community.

The scholarship is in honor of my father who, as a surgeon and family physician, served the community of Ironton and Lawrence County for over 30 years before his passing in 1985 and my mother, who supported our family and lived in Ironton almost all of her life before her passing in 2002.

My dad would be most proud of tonight’s winner as our winner this evening plans on majoring in Chemistry, the same major as my dad. Tonight’s winner clearly meets all of the scholarship requirements with an outstanding academic achievement record, a member of the 4-H club, as well as volunteering in about 30 different community events while attending Ironton High. School activities for our winner included: President of the Spanish Club as well as holding offices in the Key Club, Science Club and National Honor Society. Athletically, tonight’s winner participated in Volleyball, Track and Cross Country. An extremely impressive resume. So tonight I am proud to present the 2014 Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship to Ashton McMackin.
