Ironton High School Commencement
May 27, 2007

The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend brought beautiful weather for Ironton High School’s annual commencement.  Dave Osborne presented the Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship. Highlights of the award speech are presented here:

Good evening. My name is Dave Osborne and I want to thank Ironton High School for allowing me to present the 2007 Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship to a one-time, $1,500 award, named for my father and mother, both long time residents of Ironton. My father was a practicing doctor and surgeon in Ironton for over 30 years before his passing in 1985. My mother was a strong supporter of education and Ironton High School before her passing in 2002.

Our scholarship is awarded to a student who excels in academics, while also being active in community events and extracurricular activities. Tonight’s winner is a Summa Cum Laude graduate and member of the National Honor Society. She was also a star on the Ironton’s women’s basketball  and track teams and will be attending the University of Cincinnati on a full track scholarship in the fall.  For me personally, tonight’s winner holds a special place in our family’s heart.  Her grandmother worked side by side with my father at Lawrence County General Hospital.  She is also attending UC, which was the college attended by my father, my brother and me.  I received by MBA there in 1981  It is gives me great pleasure in presenting tonight’s Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship to Amanda Boykin.
