Ironton High School Commencement
May 29, 2016
Good evening. My name is Dave Osborne and I am the son of Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne. Tonight we continue the tradition started in 18 years ago of awarding a one-time $1,500 scholarship to an Ironton High School graduating senior who has excelled not only in the classroom, but also in extracurricular activities, as well as helping the Ironton community.
The scholarship is in honor of my father who, as a surgeon and family physician, served the community of Ironton and Lawrence County for over 30 years before his passing in 1985 and my mother, who supported our family and lived in Ironton almost all of her life before her passing in 2002.
Tonight’s winner holds a unique distinction with our scholarship committee. Our Scholarship foundation board has six members and this year’s winner was the first to be selected unanimously. His essay on diversity, which is one of our scholarship application requirements, was both thoughtful and moving. An outstanding effort. While at Ironton High School our winner also participated in the Buckeye Classic and the Band Boosters Community Service. So tonight I am proud to present the 2016 Dr. and Mrs. Barney Osborne Memorial Scholarship to Nathaniel Wise.
